Central Coast Seafood is Recognized for Their Sustainable Efforts

San Luis Obispo – SeaFood Business, America's leading trade magazine for professional seafood buyers for more than 25 years has recently recognized Central Coast Seafood for leading the way in delivering sustainable seafood products and information to its customers.

Central Coast Seafood is currently partnering with the Morro Bay Nature Conservancy to develop a model of fishery management at our local level.  The joint effort will build a more environmentally sustainable and economically viable ground fishing industry on the Central Coast.  Recently, the Pacific Fishery Management Council extended and approved permitted experimental fishing, based on positive initial data gathered from this year’s trial run to continue on this groundbreaking venture between local fisheries and the Nature Conservancy.  Put simply, management is done locally, and the fishing quotas will be monitored and established in order for the fishery to remain sustainable over the long haul.  In addition, the type of gear used to catch product is far less damaging to the environment as well as minimizing by-catch.  This venture is the first of its kind along the Pacific Coast and Central Coast Seafood is very proud to be a leading role and the ONLY Seafood distributor purchasing and processing from the participating fishermen.

Central Coast Seafood is also setting the standard for seafood distributors by being the first to partner with FishWise, a nonprofit seafood consultancy, and is making a real commitment to sustainability and completely removing red species from its product list within three years.

"Central Coast seafood is proud of its work with FishWise and its support in educating our customers to the benefits of sustainable seafood. FishWise has been a vital part of our continued success and our record sales for the first quarter of 2008... FishWise can be an incredible asset in building and growing a customer base that can be 'sustained' over the long haul."
- Giovanni Comin, Owner and CEO
